Hello, Recently I inherited a 2000 7.3l V8 diesel crew cab f250 lariat superduty ford Sadly to say one of the cylinders is cracked, I was recommended and engine swap This is my first diesel ever owned (first car matter of fact lol only 16 years old) I need help making sure witch 7.3l will fit in it... Is it ok if the motor I were to purchase was from either a 1998-2003 7.3? does it make a difference if its from a F250 or from a F350? I really need help. Can I verify witch motor i need by vin #? I'm searching all over Ebay and websites for a motor that will fit. Please help on giving me a little detail on what I may be looking for. I'm absolutely clueless.
P.S. The motor does not need to come with the Turbo, computer, etc. I have all those things, its just the motor thats bad. Please help I want to be on the road in this thing ASAP THANKS!

Yes, Young man WELCOME to the BEST Ford Truck site on the planet-The FTE!!!!
So glad to hear that a man your age is interested in something other than sitting on the couch playing video games-lol
Anyway, I think the previous replies are right for sure '99-'03 7.3 should be a direct swap-EXECPT an EARLY '99-there are SOME differences on the early engines BUT I think they will even work if you have all the stuff from/on your old/bad engine to swap over-MAY BE you CAN even go back further as well-I'm sure some other members will visit this thread and offer their expertise too. Good Luck!
Before get'n all worked up, i'd wait for more seasoned members here, to help you out. Who knows, maybe the motor you have ,was mis-diagnosed. Who/how did someone determine theres a cracked piston? Can the truck fire up? If so, have you removed the oil cap to see if theres pressure behind any smoke coming from the oil filler neck...
Agreed^^^^
I would first confirm how it was determined the cylinder was cracked....
You could have something less serious such as a cracked injector cup, which can be replaced without yanking the engine.
I was checking the compression and the 3rd cylinder doesn't hold any. There is a nasty knocking noise when she starts up and white smoke out of the exhaust pipe while she is running and the guy I got it from said it sat for a few years before so at first I thought it was the injectors... changed those, pumped out the old fuel, poured some new fuel and diesel conditioner in it, and the same knocking and stuff is there just a little less smoke.

Reason: add details
White smoke means a few different things. During the winter it means the cylinders are cold on initial fire up. Then it could be raw unburnt fuel that will make your eyes water and lungs burn. And then water in the cylinders, or blown head gasket.
I would see if you can find someone more knowledgable around your area who is willing to come take a first hand look at it with you. Where are you located? Someone from the brother hood may be close and willing to have a look
Subcribing, just would like to here what is finnally done. Pressurize the #3 cyclinder and see where the air is going. It could be easier to just fix this engine.
