96 E350 Trailer brakes

I have a 96 E350 with the 5.8. I got it used. When I got it it had no tow package at all, it did have the 4 pin plug and that's it. I had one installed a while ago and now need to wire it for trailer brakes. I cant seem to find any info that references my particular van. I have seen so many contradicting posts as to if this van had factory wiring for it or not. I'm getting confused and frustrated. Can any one with the same van please tell me what to actually look for. Any help would be great. Thanks

The guaranteed check? Pop your hood and look for a Trailer Running Lamp Relay and a Trailer Backup Lamp Relay. You will also have a Trailer Charge or Aux Battery relay. Look to the right of the radiator (on the drivers side of the engine compartment) and check for a bank of 3 relays near the starter relay.

Item Number 2 is the Relay bank you are looking for. If the relay bank isnt there, then your van isn't prewired fro brakes and you will have to wire the Bat+, backup, and Brakes to the back. You will probably have to add relays for Left Turn/Brake, Right Turn/Brake, and Running lights so you don't blow fuses on the larger trailers.

You can also look under the back of the van for these two connectors:

I just now (15 minutes ago) took this picture from underneath my 95 E350 shorty.

Here is the actual, Factual ford service manual text explaining the trailer wiring for the 1996 E-series:
Code:
Section 18-01: Wiring and Circuit Protection 1996 E-150, E-250, E-350, RV, Ambulance Prep Package, and Commercial Chassis Workshop Manual

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trailer Towing Package Wiring

Trailer Wiring Relays

There are no relays which are standard for the trailer towing class I package. The trailer towing packages may incorporate the auxiliary battery relay or the trailer battery charge relay, but not both.

The following relays are standard for the trailer towing class II package:

Trailer running lamp relay
Trailer backup lamp relay

Trailer Wiring Feed Wiring

The class I trailer wiring is fed by the following circuits:

Circuit 52 (Y) — Left turn
Circuit 64 (DG) — Right turn
Circuit 962 (BR/W) — Park/headlamp signal
Circuit 206 (W) — Ground
The class II trailer wiring is fed by the following circuits:

Circuit 52 (Y) — Left turn
Circuit 64 (DG) — Right turn
Circuit 962 (BR/W) — Park/headlamp signal
Circuit 963 (BK/LG) — Reverse signal
Circuit 49 (O) — Auxiliary battery feed
Circuit 43 (DB) — Brake
Circuit 206 (W) — Ground

Thank you. This should be very helpful. I will check it out in morning. If memory serves I believe I have seen those plugs under the rear end and the relay bank in front. Finding the actual plug where ever it is, is gunna be the fun one.

Those two plugs are the plugs that feed the trailer, and they are loacated on the drivers side framerail, near the spare tire. If you have both, then you only need the 7 pin pigtail (that big plug i show in my pictures) and the brake controller pigtail. The two round pins feed the 7 pin trailer connector, and the Brake Controller pigtail was standard across all ford trucks until 2008, and can be bought at many places that sell trailer brake controllers.
