Oil Addatives

There is lots of talk about using an Fuel Addative but what about Oil.

I have used them alot in the past and for one diesel pickup I had (99 Dodge) I believe that it raised my fuel mileage (not scientific) between 1 and 2 miles per gallon.

Oddly enough it was DuraLube that I found most successful.

Does anyone use them and have a suggestion?

No need for oil additives when using API CJ-4 rated diesel oil. If you want to raise your fuel economy with oil then use a 10W30 or a 5W40 API CJ4 oil.

I would stay FAR FAR AWAY from any sort of oil additive. Of any kind. Ever.

Seriously, most of us recommend fuel additives because they are added insurance that the fuel we buy is properly treated. This is because raw ULSD is NOT of the proper quality for these trucks to run correctly, and must be treated to be usable. Modern engine oils are not simply refined petroleum like diesel fuel is; they are very finely engineered lubricants that are designed to do a number of things very well.

I can't stress this enough...NEVER put anything in your engine except the proper weight CJ-4 spec engine oil!

I was a little skitish about putting anything in my oil. I don't want to screw anything up without ablsolute certainty that is it for the good and not just a bunch of marketing hype.

Hell no to the slick 50. But I've heard good things about Amsoil, but not all their products are API certified, and I wouldn't touch any of those.

Yup, the only exception to this is if you are towing heavy in hot weather, and in that case either 15w40 or 5w40 synthetic would work a little better. Here's the chart from the book:

I've read more than a few UOAs of Motorcraft oil and they all look good. Motorcraft is good oil.

You cant go wrong with a 5w40, the synthetic oil is cheap insurance if you ask me.
