valve or rod problem?
I have a 7.3 lt pre power stroke engine. The engine started to over heat but the upper rad hose had no pressure. Oil level was ok but gauge went down to low at idle and high when moving. A gas mechanic says it is either a valve or rod. How much farther would I have to go after I pull the valve covers off to see what the problem is?

welcome to FTE. as parkland said, check with a diesel mechanic.
it sounds like the water pump failed.
