I have an 06 SD, 5.4, stock. Very well maintained. It has 73000 miles, every fluid has been changed twice except engine oil. WHich has been done 4 times in the first 2500, and every 5000 with mobil 1 ss...
OK heres my issue. Pulling into work at 3:45 am I hear a strange grumble as I turn my wheel. Then its gone... I turn my wheel back an forth after I am parked, no noise. On my way home no noise till I get home (22 miles) Same noise.... Then after 3 hours parked, i head to the gym, it does it often on the 5 mile trip... and one the way home. Tonight I pick my buddy up from dropping his car off, and my dash itiot lights flash intermittantly, then go out... Noise is back whether I am rolling or not. and Now my ABS is on...
I noticed my ps fluid was a shot glass low. not much, but it smelled like my cordless drill when it burned up, so I am thinkin my pump is bad or is going bad.... Whats with the ABS light? is it coincidence???
The noise coming out from the front sounds like ABS when braking on ice, but no peddle pulse.... SO I am thinking, 2 seperate issues that happened at the same time.... SInce my fluid stinks. How hard is it to change the pump?
Can the pulley or pump come apart while driving??? I am a freak with maint, and never take maiden voyages, so I am thinkin about missin work to fix this. Anybody have any ideas?
The power steering pumps on these trucks are kind of weak for the size of the truck. Us gas engine owners are somewhat lucky because the pump only adds power assist to the steering. On diesel trucks and larger vehicles they also provide power to the brakes (hydroboost).
Making noise is probably a sign that a PS pump replacement may be in your near future.
So when the pump goes bad, does the pulley come off? or do I just loose steering ease? I hate to loose the belt, if the pump seizes or brakes, and possibly hurt the radiator from flying parts. Or have to waite for a tow, cuz if it seizes or I lloose the belt the water pump stops turning, or can any of the above happen???
I have never had any power steering pump issues ever.... SO this to me is weird
I do not honestly know. I have never seen one seize, but I imagine it is possible, I have seen them fail by giving little to no assistance.
One member here did have his AC compressor seize. It stopped the engine cold. He thought he locked his engine up, but when urged by other members he removed the belt and the engine fired up, which is when he discovered the issue was the compressor.
I went up to the dealer this morning. Plugged it in, and my right front ABS sensor is bad.
My truck, kept going into ABS then default safety, that was the noise.
Thank god my sensor, is seperate from the wheel bearing assembly, its a plug in item. I know my buddies Dodge, he had to do the whole wheel bearing assembly.
Its nice to have friends at the dealer. No charge for the plug in.... $80.00 for the part.
Steering fluid is Mercon synthetic and stinks normaly....So thats fine.
Off topic..... I love my sig. it is also 40 sw..... Thats why DEA, FBI, State Highway patrol and SPecial forces use them.
