Shift-Knob Button
Problem: The shift-**** button appears to be loose, or doesn't have the ability to be depressed completely to allow for a smooth shift between gears. It hasn't locked up, but I am very conscious of how much pressure I exert on the button to make sure it shifts.
I have heard there is a TBS solution (doesn't apply to me with no warranty), I have also seen a YouTube video that removes a black piece within the shifter mechanism (when you depress the brakes, its clicks), but I am not sure this is the root cause of the issue.
Anyone experience such problems, and have a DIY solution? or do I have to bring it in to the mechanic?
Thanks.
I want to make sure we understand what you are talking about here. Does your Sport Trac have a column shifter or a console shifter? The description leads me to believe console, but I thought only the Aviators had that.
If column shift, are you referring to the "OD Off" button on the end of the shifter? If yes, then the shift interlock that releases when you press the brake pedal would not have anything to do with that.
Also, a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) could still apply to your truck, but since you're out of warranty a dealer or shop would charge you money to implement the TSB solution. TSBs are generally just typical fixes for rather common issues. When such "common issues" are deemed to be safety concerns, then they may become recalls. In the event of a recall the warranty period typically does not matter.

Hope this helps.
