Question got a few questions

okay so i have a 300 straight six in my 82 ford 1/2 ton and a 302 on the engine stand. i plan on swapping the 302 into it. really my main questions are, is the 302 going to be any quicker than the 300? and when it comes to pulling (dont do it very much but when i do its usually just a 12 foot trailer with 2 or 3 quads on it) is the 302 going to do any better than the 300? really my problem is that i live in colorado and when i go camping i go over mountain passes and the 300 doesnt pull grades with a trailer very well at all (or without a trailer for that matter). it has a np 435 tranny and pretty low gears in the rear. not sure exactly what gears but i know theyre fairly low and i dont exactly have the time to pull my diff cover off to count the teeth. any help would be greatly appriciated.

If the 300 were fresh I'd vote for it every day. But I'm guessing it isn't fresh since it doesn't pull very well w/o the trailer. Even if you have 3.50's, which is about as low as I can imagine for an F100 unless they've been swapped, the 300 should only be turning ~2500 at 60 and it should pull that nicely.

So, I'd bet the 302 will be better as the 300 must be ill. However, don't pull the cover to count teeth. Jack both wheels up, put it on jack stands, and rotate the drive shaft 10 turns while counting wheel rotation.

If it's stock the door card will tell you the rear ratio. What's the mileage and condition of the 300?

From reading on this forum and my personal experience in an F150: towing with a 302 will give you 460mpg with 300 speeds. I'd recommend a 351w.

You can also jack the rear up and spin the drive shaft to give you a ballpark range for rear differential gearing.

Both tires off the ground, spin the drive shaft until one tire makes a full revolution, multiply the number of drive shaft turns it took to make the tire go around once by 2, and you've got the ballpark range.

For instance, spinning the drive shaft a little more than 1.5 turns gives me 1 turn of one rear tire (open diff). Multiply 1.5 by 2 and get 3. This tells me my rear end ratio would be around 3:1. If it was a 9'', it WOULD be 3:1, as the 3.08:1 gear ratio, which is really close, came in the 8.8'' rears.

The motor could also be struggling as altitude changes, but this would start to get noticeable once you start going up around 1000 to 1500 feet from where the carburetor was set.

Is a full tuneup done, fresh oil and air filter, new plugs, wires, cap, and rotor, as well as timing and mixture set correctly?

From what I'm seeing here, I'm thinking the carburetor might not be adjusted to the altitude.

Where did the truck come from? From what elevation?

If I get my truck over 7000', it starts running like crap as the computer can no longer compensate. My 1981 is computer controlled. I have my carb adjusted for 1500'.

A tune up, and/or carb adjustment/or rebuild might wake that 300 up.

When I used to go into the mountains in the days before fuel injection; I would see motor homes parked at the tops of the mountains that were flooded due to the carbs being set for a lower altitude.
