the stuck guy ill go to tow hooks if possible or any sturdy frame point that will cause little to no harm to my strap or there vehicle. on the other end of the strap i could go to my front tow hooks or ill use my receiver hitch. in my hitch i have a few options. i have the slip in d ring adapter, i got a stupid huge hook i built to go into the receiver or another good option if you got just the hitch pin is to slip the loop end of your strap into the receiver tube and stick the pin through. ive pulled a many stuck vehicles and a few trees with the last method. i have yet to bend a 5/8" hitch pin.
I have seen many slip off the ball pulling. Use a good solid hook, D-ring, or shackle. I have a hitch mounted winch that I can use both front or rear on my truck and plenty of shackles and short straps. Frame wraps slip too so I avoid them but they can work out OK. I watched my friend loop around the front suspension and pinch the strap in the stuck truck. He had to leave the strap behind. Thats why I had some short straps made for trees and leave it behind options.
As stated above.... *never* go to a ball and avoid as much as possible tugging in reverse.
I'd run down to HF and pick up one of their receiver mounted d-rings. Looks like okay quality and it will give you a close to proper point to pull from.
