I am going to have my clutch replaced (115k on original). I am going to have the guy replace the Universal Joints and check the Tranny Mount and fluids while he's in there. Anything else I should have him do besides this while he's there?
while you are at it, new slave cylinder, new master cylinder, new output shaft seal for driveshaft, pilot bearing/bushing, I hope you plan on new new pressure plate along with the disk, and probably turn the flywheel. Also good time to check starter and flywheel engagement teeth.
If its one of the older vehicles with the plastic plugs, have them upgrade the plugs to the metal ones. (these are the ones on the shifter plate).
DEFINATELY CHANGE THOSE PLASTIC PLUGS!!!! I didn't find out until too late and the damage it can cause is catastrophic. You won't know your leaking fluid because it only does it when you're driving and won't leave a puddle under your truck when it's parked. Have him pull the top plate off have check for damage inside. You'll save yourself alot of time and money.
Does Ford still use the plastic plugs? Had considered a Ranger 4x2 XL reg cab with a 2.3 and a 5-speed, but Ive heard of problems with the 5-speeds (the fluid leak you spoke of).
Had planned on a Toyota Tacoma, however if Ford fixed their tranny problems I may go with a Ranger.
You can get the Ranger for less money, is cheaper to fix, has a TACH (dont understand why Toyota doesnt offer one) and you can get a split bench seat (Toyota just has a traditional 1-piece seat).
Anyhow, lemmie know.
to the best of my knowledge the plastic plugs were discontinued several years ago. My 94 had a strange sound when we bought it, thought it was a throwout bearing, when I drained the oil for pulling the trans had chunks of gear come out on the magplug.
Had to r&r the mainshaft and first gear. Now I have lost OD as I guess they are a problem if used a lot. Mine is mainly highway so it got used a bunch. Now with 4 speed only the RPM is about 500 higher than with OD and gas milage is about the same.
Truck had 65000 on it when I bought it and the damage had been done. Had it rebuilt and the guy said everything else was good. At 107000 OD went out.
Spoke with the guy who rebuilt it (also does race car trans so he knows his stuff) and he said thatin all actuality 4th gear is the best for the ranger. WHen I asked about the OD he said that when engaged/used a lot that it works and eventually it will wear the engagement so that it slips out.
$500 total to pull, repair and replace ($200 for the repair).
Like I said I now have a 4 speed and it works just as well.
