Burning antifreeze?

hi,
Lately I've noticed the expansion tank for my cooling system (89,ranger 2.9) , is low. However it happens over a long time (months). It will only become noticable after driving a large number of miles. I also get a white smoke out of my tailpipe, no matter how hot or cold the air is, and it is very noticable. I also fail my emissions tests in NJ. My NOx reading are double the standard.

I was wondering if it was possible to have a small leak in the head gasket, that would leak antifreeze into the combustion chambers? I guess that would explain white smoke.

I had the cooling system flushed and new hoses put on a few months ago. I have never found antifreeze on my driveway.
the truck isn't burning oil either.( and wouldn't that be blue smoke?)

I need to fix this to pass inspection, Help!

Unhappy Burning antifreeze?

The 2.9L will last well into the 300,000 mile range if taken care of. However these motors WILL NOT take any over heating or hints of it. The heads are weak by design and cracking is extremely common with these engines. I have even seen cases where over heating wasn't really an issue. I have personally replaced about 8 sets of heads on nearly as many vehicles. I have a tech article about the 2.9L head replacement if you would like it. Just E-mail me.

Of course there is always a possibility that it is just a head gasket. If no obvious cracks are present, do have the heads looked at and refreshed. There is also an aftermarket company that sells a stronger designed haed. The name escapes me at this time but it had something to do with "World" in the companies name I believe. If you interested I'll try to locate it for you.

Thanks Megalomaniac,

BTW, if i do end up having the heads cleaned up a bit, what else should i have checked and replaced while the engine is somewhat disassembled?
