My LATE '99 was never undercoated or rustproofed.
It HAD been doing OK until last winter when we went from Florida to Ohio in January and got into a snow storm-got to experiance the snow, ice and the chemical and salt spreaders-what a mess.
Anyway I really hadn't paid much attention to the underside of my truck until yesterday when I changed the oli and the fuel filter.
Most everything metal has what my Mustang restorers call "Flash Rust" which is little more than just a very thin film at this point.
My question is without getting crazy what can I do about this so it doesn't spread or grow and get worse-after-all I'm in Florida on the east coast. Thanks!
The undercoatng on my E99 appears to be parafin (?) based. It scraps off like very tough wax. Where I have not removed it to paint it looks reddish but it is not rust. Check a spot on the frame to see what you have.
I noticed the same thing on my truck since I've been down on the Texas gulf coast. There were a few very windy days where the salt spray soaked the truck (even rusted the chain on my motorcycle) ill probably give the chassis a spray of oil when i get back home.
Now you know why I moved out of Ohio Rick, that salt will kill a vehicle within a few years.
