Yep a k&n caused me to rebuild my turbo and put a new wheel on it. Not good. As far as power Mr. canadian, with a dp, chip, intake and exhaust, you'd be lucky to hit 280 or so hp. The next step would be injectors and hpop upgrade, maybe elec. fuel. Then a bigger turbo, etc. 500hp, he better have a BIG and ready checkbook..
yep trust the folks word on here about K&N filters, I had an oiled one and while gas engines can get away with atmospheric pressure, turbo's suck air in, now anything that gets past the filter (and if its oiled will almost certainly will bring dirt with it) and into the turbo impeller. suffice to say its like sandblasting the wheel, not good. As for the tymar filter, here is a link to the one I ordered Riffraff Diesel: RDP 6637 Filter Kit
not to thread jack but with basic mods (lets say the intake system above, 3" DP, 4" exhaust and chip) realistically, how much power can you achieve?
What would be the first item in terms of power limitation past the above mods? injectors? turbo?
Sorry again not trying to thread jack I am trying to settle a dispute a argument with a buddy that thinks he is gonna push 500+ power easy without having to do any internal work or massive amounts of cash.
Well in answer to your buddy saying he's gonna get 500+.... the powerstrokehelp guy says you can with his 7.3 mods. no internal mods. That is with a 2000 model yr or newer truck though... so idk.
With just the intake, 3" dp, 4" exhaust and a chip how much power should I be making? Guesses?

I figured with a 97-03 you might be able to crack 500 but not with a obs (94.5-97).
Based on what I have asked and being told in this thread, somewhere in the 60hp range and 120ft will be gained from those mods.

Plenty of guys knocking on 500 or at 500 with OBS' on here. Don't remember what year the that SD changed rods, but the OBS bottom end is stouter. All of the upgrades the SD have can be done, relatively easy to an OBS and then some.
The 94.5-97 psd stock crank, rods, piston, and block will handle 550-600hp but the is NO way you will hit that 500hp mark with stock injector and turbo. You wil have to upgrade the injectors, turbo, HPO system, fuel system

sorry for any confusion I meant to say that the last generation of 7.3 PS would be easier to break 500hp barrier vs the OBS, not that you could not crack 500 with a OBS
