4R100 missing chunk

http://www.flickr.com/photos/5869357...in/photostream

I have a 4R100 diesel trans. with a missing chunk by the inspection area. Is it still safe to run?. The aluminum there is quite thin

A picture would be a big help here, or find a picture of a 4R100 and point out where it broke. Worse case is to replace the case and or the trans itself, or just let it ride and see what happens. I have seen plenty of broken cases run without issue.

His pic shows a big chunk out of the bottom of the bell.

You will pull debris in there at some point.

I'd inspect it for cracks, and smooth out any square edges that will help propagate a crack into the rest of the trans. Smooth, round edges vs. the jagged edge you show. If you have insomnia, this might help:

Then, I'd try to rig up some kind of shield, probably with plastic and a little glue or clamps--just to keep mud, leaves and small children out.

And keep an eye on it.

THANKS, that's roughly what i was thinking as well, just smooth it to a half moon shape and then maybe welding an additional piece to the inspection cover and calling it good. I don't believe there is much stress in that area. Correct?

Should be, the bolts go through much higher on the bell. Did this get dropped or hit something?

They didnt tell me how it broke, or where the original piece was. I just bought it anyway for 450 . I thought it was a good deal even with having that chunk missing.
