My speedo has stopped working. I disconnected the cable from behind the gauge and drove the truck around to find found out the cable is not spinning. I reconnected the cable to the gauge and then disconnected it from the transmission. The gear practically fell out when removing the cable. I placed the gear onto the end of the cable and spun it by hand. The gauge moved so I don't think the cable is the the problem. I think the gear is traveling too far into the transmission, there for disengaging the cable. Is there supposed to be some sort of clip holding the gear to the cable?
What trans do you have? Mine did the same thing, and I found the retaining clip behind the speedo drive gear had come out of its groove. That let the drive gear slide backwards. Mine is a 3-sp LD. That clip also sets the main trans shaft in position, so it's worth checking ASAP. (Kind of hard to see the clip, look for the gap in it at 9:00 on the shaft) If you stick a screwdriver in the hole and can move the drive gear back and forth, your clip is likely out of the groove.
Yea, mines a standard LD 3 spd, aswell, from a 53' or 54' f100. I think it's the same in an 52' F1. So if that clip has come out of its groove, does the transmisson have to be pulled to access that portion of the shaft?

Nope, in your case you just pull the driveshaft off, and remove the tailhousing.
the gear on your speedo cable should also have a C clip holding it on. If its not there that is probably your issue. Its sliding forward disengaging from the cable itself.
Just so there is no confusion on my part. Here is a page from Mid-Fifties catalog. The original 3sd (which I have) does not show a clip... but the late model does.
I don't think the '53's speedo gears are interchangeable with that plastic type; be nice if they were. The one on my '52 is bronze and at least 2X as tall as the plastic gear (on the teeth). The cable doesn't attach to mine with that fork, either, it's a big nut on the cable. Maybe they changed in '53?
