Im pretty sure that Installing a/c in an vehicle that never had it to begin with would be a gigantic pita, but I'm putting the ol girl to the side soon (aka not my daily), and would like to tinker around with something like this.
Is it even possible? Can I steal a unit off another truck or do I have to buy new?
X2 on just get all the parts off a donor is best way. But if you want an easy solution, you can get an add-on air that is just the evaporator and fan unit. Like they use in hot rods and in the older cars. You still need to mount the compressor and condenser to the engine and in front of the radiator. Plus make up the lines to run between all of the components. Having a donor truck will give you all the parts, just make sure they are good shape.
There are a number of things that could make your install difficult. You'll probably need a new dash (can't say for sure as I've never had an 87-91 non ac but my 86 non ac truck has a dash completely different from no ac - vents and etc).
The firewall could be different from non ac to ac trucks (can someone confirm this? - need to know for a future potential cab swap).
Your best bet is just to get a whole parts truck with maybe even working ac. I recently completely rebuilt and replaced an ac system in a 94 oldsmobile and the cost was about $1000 in parts doing it myself (condenser, evap, drier, lines etc etc.. EVERYTHING).
If its worth anything the ac system on these trucks is cake to work on compared to the olds and most other vehicles.
I'm guessing the super humid 90-100 degree weather around here this summer is getting to you?
Yeah I sweat when I read a book so needless to say even when the windows are rolled down and im doing sixty it aint enough. as I stated it will be something to tink on. Truck will not be the dd for mich longer.

Me too!
You need to watch cl for one of those motor gone and trans going deals.
If you have a donor the whole heater box need to be cahnged, it you are good, the whole a/c system can be removed from the truck without discharging it, the evap, compressor, condensor and lines can be removed independently of the rest of the truck.
Just curious, TJ, what year are both trucks.
I have a 1990 and a 1996 that has air and was considering the same thing.
The different dash's is what steered me away.
