Ford 351w identification

So I bought a 1989 HD f-250 4x4. After further inspection I found that the engine had been replaced. The truck runs a little rough but does not burn anything or smoke. I got under the truck to find the block number thinking I could look up which plugs that motor needed as well as the timing and what it came from. All I have found is info from other forums that it is a 94 351w either already a roller motor or roller ready. Also that it is the same long block as the act lightning 351w. It said all that it is
Missing is the GT-40 heads and intake. Does anyone know any real info on this block number? Year? Plugs? Timing? And does it have the same cam as the lightning? And is it a roller motor? Any thing will help. Here is the number. F4TE-6015-AA-10. Thank you all

The truck is an 89 so I would stick to what the 89 calls for in plugs ect. I don't think the plug changed in design. Maybe in heat range but the trucks computer still thinks it's an 89. Yet all F250s that weren't sent to Cali were Speed Density IIRC. You won't know if it's a roller ect until you remove the intake. Sounds like 94 was a unique year for the 351W.

There is no way to know exactly what vehicle this engine came from.. Ford doesn't track that info, but since it's a '94 casting it's a pretty safe bet it's from another truck and it should have the F4TE roller cam in it. All 351/5.8 motors use the same block in any given year but the Lightning motor got a unique(flat tappet) cam along with the GT40 heads and intake so it's not likely that's what you have, but base timing is the same for all and that's 10deg BTDC after the spout plug is removed to disable computer advance. The standard plug for regular production E7TE heads is the Motorcraft AWSF32.

Thank you for your response. I figured the base time was the aame as with the plugs. The other question that I had was can you time it with the stock timing tab. The tab in the truck has a tube on it that I was told was used with the old school computers. The used a probe to check the time. It does have a flat spot on the top of the tab that could be used if its in the right spot. I was told that I may have to use an after market timing tab. Any ideas?

No special tools required to set the timing other than a timing light: Fuel Injection Technical Library » Setting the timing

Arrow Timing tube!!!

FOMOCO, I have the same tube on my 1990 5.8, to time it I got in there and cleaned the tab on the timing chain cover and the marks on the crank flange then highlited them in white paint and did the timeing as normal ... worked jist fine Dave
I always thought the tube was to hold a magnetic pickup probe of sorts.... way tooo fancy for me !!!! LOL
yes ... what he said ^^^^^ !!!
