hey
i bought this 351w from a guy i work with i consider him a friend
he said he ran this 351w for a few min and it had good oil pressure idles well and didnt smoke.
well the timing chain i was able to pull off the gear by hand.
all 8 plugs were oil fouled i mean coated.
how did he run this engine like this ?
the engine did get on its side on the way home tho
im just pissed but want to check my facts before i talk to him
im waiting for a new timing chain to check compression
thanks
ps i paid 500.00 for a 69 351w out of a cougar complete
This might sound harsh but you bought a used motor so you can't really expect it to be as tight as a brand new one. The thing with timing chains is they can stretch enough to be ready to jump teeth on a sproket but give no outward indication that it is worn that bad, so you won't know until you strip the motor down. The timing chain should be one of those things replaced anyway if you're just going to run the motor as is, you can include a new oilpump and pickup and a gasket set in that list too. Oil in the cumbustion chambers could simply be that the motor was on it's side during trasnport, a compression and leakdown test will tell you more the engines condition anyway.
The 351w is a bad machine and probably did run fairly decent in the condition you got it. Like Paul said, the timing chain is one of those things that you really cant tell until its gone, unless the chain is wearing so fast it effects the actual timing..but thats not common. Same with the cam. If one dude drove a car for years and the cam wore, a guy would hardly notice over time...unless its a late 70's chevy small block and the lobes wear completely flat. (that causes problems) I wouldnt have paid 500 for any used motor personaly, unless the owner had a build sheet of some sort.
For peace of mind, Tear Down the engine and inspect everything, replace parts as needed, now you will know what you have. doing a leak down test first is not a bad idea

Well ... if old engines were meant to be run on gas with lead and you put in gas with no lead, what do you think happens to the ring and valves?
> all 8 plugs were oil fouled i mean coated.
Yep, just about that.
You got taken and it is your own fault. An engine that old is worth $100 unless you have a blue print sheet for it. It could have run perfect for him even with the plugs that bad and the timing chain that bad. Especially if it has the plastic tipped gears.
Just suck it up and learn from your experience, your co-worker did not make you buy it without hearing it run or a compression test.
I would tear it down and look at the valves and stems. It might not be worth fixing without a full rebuild. Since it is not running, you will get limited results from a compression test, though a leak down if it is installed in a vehicle already might be good for a cracked head.
If it came with A/C and all the trimmings, then you got an average deal for $500, so I wouldn't worry about it.
