I have an F350 with factory brake controller. when I check the voltage on the blue wire at the receiver I only measure 3 volts. In the manual it says that > 1-2volts is ok for trucks built before 03/05 and > 9-10 volts for trucks built after 03/05. My truck was built 11/04 so my 3 volts should be ok but I can't get the brakes to lock up even with the gain set to 10. I have a slider fifth wheel so I need to be able to lock the trailer brakes to slide the hitch. I have confirmed that the trailer brakes work fine hooked up to another truck. I'm tempted to try another controller but they aren't cheap to say the least. I don't understand why they call for such low voltage pre 03/05, how is that supposed to activate the brakes?
Your trailer brakes won't be active until you reach about 6 MPH or so. I know they are active when the door locks lock. If you need to lock the RV brakes to make the slider work, pull the emergency cable ( breakaway cable) for the brakes. Be SURE to reinstall in as soon as your slider function is done.
You need the newer controller. Get an '06-up unit and you'll be much happier. Also, if you're going to use the breakaway switch you should probably unplug the trailer cord first, as many brake controllers don't like being backfed and will protest by going poof!
