another thing i noticed was the
round skirt cutaway for the crank counterweights.
man, there's about an 1/8" clearance there!
never even noticed it on other engines before!
i guess that's why all those stroker pistons are
about as tall as a Big Mac, just enough for the
rings plus a little more.
back to the grind!

not quite done.
have to get 1 1/4" nut off oil pan pickup.
put a combination wrench on it and
whole thing started spinning around.
i don't want to bend up or tear
oil pickup tube.
then there's the oil filter adapter too.
it's 1 1/4" but it's knicked up from somebody
hammer and chiseling it a little.
have a nice day!

next up is measuring pushrods.
one of them is a replacement.
they're hollow type.
also casting #'s on rocker arms
see if they are 1.43 like they're supposed to be.
have a nice day!

measuring pushrods was not a slam dunk.
came up with 8 3/16" overall , which does not match up
with any i've seen for sale for example.
i think some people are measuring just the tube without the ends.
rockers are 1.43 ratio, stamping # 5751066,
they sure are little casting marvels!
scraping pistons tops didn't go too well either.
gumout really doesn't do anything to baked on carbon.
i'll stick them in carb dip later, that usually works.
i'm looking for the oversize stamp on piston top .020, 040 or 060
to see what i'm in for here.
have a nice day!

Pushrod length usually usually indicates the effective length. 8 3/16 oal should be about 8" effective. Effective length is measured from the bottom of the ball to the bottom of the cup.

that's good info.
this 292 has the extra two cooling holes in
the heads, gaskets and block.
saw them in the heads and went back to
double check gaskets & block.
have a nice day!

latest news is this block has two cylinder sleeves in it.
the one is bored straight through and
then the sleeve was pressed in.
the other one machinist left about 1/8" of original bore
at the bottom, then the sleeve was pressed in
down to meet the lip.
that way the sleeve is 'captured' between lip and head surface.
that's old time craftmanship!
also, did get oil filter adapter off totally no problems.
have a nice day!
