So the trans in my 00 XLS is shot. Got a donor that was rebuilt 10k ago for a good deal. Dropped mine alone today. Was a pain. It's out but the transfer case ended up slipping of the jack and fell about 6 inches to the ground. I plan on using it since the donor didn't come with one. Could this have damaged it, or is there any way to check? Planning on changing the rear main as well since it has had a slow leak and its accessible. Any other items worth looking at while the trans is out? Thanks.
As long as the case isn't bent or cracked, you dodged the bullet on the TC.
Make sure you flush or replace any trans coolers. New TC too, or if the trans came with one, make sure everything is clean.
Ford installs an in-line trans filter up front by the cooler when they swap one out, can't hurt to add that.
While the trans is out, consider doing the cam chain tensioners. It's hard to do in the vehicle as you usually remove the engine, but I think it can be done that way. Yea, I know, it makes this twice the project....
No cracks or bends. Definitely lucky there. Planning on flushing the cooler and will check on the part you mentioned. I should have said this is the OHV motor. Still worth checking the chain tension? I know that has been a problem with the SOHC's but thought this motor wasn't really prone to that.
Thanks for the advice guys. Hope to have it back together early next week. Got the flywheel off today. Was hanging on by only around 1/4 in. Glad I didn't wait any longer.
Back at it today. Hope to get the rear main changed and the new trans setup ready to go back in. The flywheel was so bad it started to wear into the spacer behind it. Anyone have experience there. Would like to try and grind the surface flat and reuse it, unless it's best to just replace. Also, for a 2000 it had a 6 bolt flywheel. I'm guessing that someone must have changed the motor in this before I got it, unless Ford happened to use old parts. Should have been an 8 bolt right?
The trans swap is done. Getting the fluid today and hoping everything is ok. Thanks for the tips and advice on here guys. It was one heck of a job in the driveway, but better than the alternative.
Back to square one with the Explorer. Drove the truck about 4 miles last night and got a horrible rattle in the bellhouse again. The original flywheel was destroyed almost all the way around the crank holes. Pretty sure thats what wiped out the front of the old trans. New flywheel, new trans, sound is back. Thinking maybe it is a problem with the crank itself now. Something is causing the rattle. All bolts were torqued and threadlocked. Hope someone can point me in the right direction. Not really wanting to tear it all back out but not much choice at this point.
