Anyone every hear of or have done an r22 conversion? What would it entail? If i read correctly 22 and 12 are similar in the way the operate (as in they use the same compressor oil). I am not converting anything as of yet since my r12 system is working but I was thinking (i know, trouble right?) that since converting to 134a requires opening the system, changing the orifice tube and condenser and flushing the oil out of the system. why not look into 22 if they're the same base. As of yet it is still available and even so you could stock up on it before it's deemed illegal!
Any thoughts? I'm just beginning to learn about AC so forgive me if this sounds like an absurd idea. If it is, tell me why I want to learn.
You're asking for trouble even just thinking about R-22 in an automotive system. Three months ago I was paying $140.00 for a drum of R-22. Now I'm paying $389.00 and it's only increasing. There's an evironmental reason it's being phased out, specifically the ozone layer.
The element which is missing in these newer and government mandated refrigerants is chlorine.
