the ball socket on the end looks like something to do with a push rod.

that isn't something to do with a mechanical lift pump is it?

It looks like a pump arm too, thats the only thing I think it could be, the convex end of the ball contacts the diaphram of the pump, you can see where it's wore in the center on the bottom where the pivot pin would be. I bet the pin fell out and the arm fell in the motor.

iv read someone claim they found several broken off lift pump arms in their oil pans when they replace/re sealed them due to improper install over the years by previous owners lol!

But the tip that would ride on the cam shows no wear. It looks too small to be from the lift pump. how big is it? A pic with a quarter or something for reference might help.
It could have been dropped in the valley years ago.

This is true, I just can't figure out how anything would make its way down through the valley or other oil drainbacks. And I noticed it didn't have any wear either and that has me comfused too.

But looking now at the underside that looks to have some wear, I bet it was installed wrong and popped off.

I think there are several versions of the arm, if it's broke and laying in the pan it could be the wrong pump to start out with.

What it looks like to me is the thingamabob tool that mechanics use to keep the oil from flying around from the lifters when adjusting a set of solid lifters. Doesn't make much sense since these are hydraulic lifters. Unless a PO tried to adjust the lifters.

I was thinking something along with the dog bone that holds the roller lifters in so they don't rotate. But, i think that is a single piece. Mind you i've never looked into the valley of an idi anyway.
