93 f150 5speed
engine will bolt right in.
If the shifter is sloppy, you might want to examine the
two plastic shifter bushings which crack and also the
two metal pivot pins the shifter rides on before you
replace the trans.
This can be done from inside the cab by removing the
4 screws holding the shifter boot. Pull the boot up
onto the shifter which will expose the bolt that holds the
shifter to the shifter stub. Place the trans. in neutral.
Remove the nut on the bolt stud and place it onto the other end
of the bolt stud and tighten it.
This should pull the stud away from the shifter. If the bolt doesn't pull
off, take a punch and tap it off.
Remove the 3 torx bolts and lift the shifter stub out of the
top cover. This will expose the two shifter pins and the plastic
shifter bushings.
Could also be a bad shifter fork in the top cover assembly.
3rd and 4th gear share the same shifter fork. The top cover
must be removed to examine them. Either pull the trans.
or remove the transmission tunnel cover from inside
the cab.
Here's a link that shows the shifter parts. The large washer is not used on a F150.

The link below shows a You Tube video of the shifter bushing replacement. The video
is not a F150 but the procedure is the same.

If you notice, there are 3 rods in the shifter cover.
1 rod is for gears 1 and 2.
1 rod is for gears 3 and 4
1 rod is for gear 5 and reverse. This rod engages
a shifter fork that is towards the rear of the
trans. and controls 5th gear and reverse.
The forks ride on a synchronizer hub which is shown in the picture.
The hub can be in 3 different positions. Forward, backwards or in the
middle which is neutral.
If all of the synchronizer hubs are in neutral when the input
shaft is turned by hand, the output shaft does not spin.
If you manually move the hub for 1 and 2
backwards to the rear of the trans. it will slide over
the synchronizer (brass colored tooth gear) and
then over the gear teeth for first gear and lock
the gear to the hub.
If you manually rotate the input shaft
the output shaft will rotate and the trans. will be in
first gear.
You can slide the hub forward which will
engage 2 gear.
Place the hub back in the center/neutral
position and do the same with the hub
for 3rd and fourth gear. If the gears engage
and turn the output shaft your problem is
either the clutch fork is worn and not moving
the hub forward or backwards enough
to engage the gear or the shifter bushings and
pivot pins are causing the problem.
You can purchase the parts on E-bay or shop around
for the best price.

Also on the back of the shifter cover are 3 casting holes
where rubber plugs were used. If your trans. has the
rubber plugs, purchase some Dorman 108-555 metal plugs
(I think they are 5/8th inch) and use them to replace the rubber plugs which over
time allows the transmission fluid to leak out causing
the transmission bearings to go bad due to low fluid.
