Anyone had any luck rebuilding one of these? I have never looked at it, even though I must have had my tank out a dozen times. But it appears I am in the need of one. While at the track she went straight to full. And after 589 miles, has failed to fall into place. I hopiong to drop the tank and find something stupid, but, you never know.
It should be no more then a Potentiometer I would think, but who knows.
I would expect a potentiometer as well, but just am not sure myself. Besides, I'm not sure how rebuildable they are either.
I do know, as do you I'm sure, that the little wire float rod tends to get rusty from exposure to fuel-entrained water. Hopefully, it's just stuck from something which can be cleaned off/removed to allow free movement again. I know that the new units are pricey, even from Tousley ($315-$350 depending upon which tank you have).
I believe you can use the sending unit from same year gasser. Atleast that was case when mine went. It was half the cost.150ish.
Were you able to verify that the part numbers were the same?
I saw something similar when I replaced the hood struts on my hood several years back. In that case, they (Ford) actually had two different part numbers, but they are identical parts and either can be used on either side, but there is about a $1 price difference between the two units.

Cant remember but it worked and was one half the price...I had a link for the part but I lost it.

I read on another forum that you can get just the potentiometer for a gasser and DIY to the diesel. The diesel potentiometer is riveted and the gasser is held with screws. Just drill out the mounting rivets on the diesel potentiometer and screw on the gasser potentiometer.
It's another one of those non-serviceable deals on the diesel, but Serviceable on a gasser.
Diesel fuel level sender is on the opposite side of the mounting bracket but this shows the rivet mount:
