In the process of tearing down my 85 f250 I tossed the fuel tank without looking at the sending unit. I went to the parts store and they said that there isn't a sending unit. I'm no expert but doesn't there have to be a sending unit? The truck has a mechanical fuel pump if that makes a difference.
I've got the new 19g tank and was wondering if someone could shed some light on this situation.
there is a sending unit, it should be located on the top of the tank, as a hole. check out oreillyauto.com and look for the Part # FG74A. hope this helps.
I looked up the part# and it looks right but,I typed in the vehicle on the same site and no sending unit is listed. Also, in my LMC catalog has two different ones. One has 2 outlet tubes and one has 1 outlet tube.
If you are looking at page 58 of the LMC book, that is specific for broncos. I looked up and down my LMC book to find any other sending units that had two outlet tubes and couldn't find any. the gas tank you have should be a side mount, and if you look on page 56 of your LMC book it shows a photo of the sending unit right there. as for why it's not showing up on oreillyauto i'm unsure. as far as i am aware they are the same 80-86 you just have to make sure you get the 19 gal sending unit instead of the 16 gal sending unit.
please do your own research though, do not just take my word for it. A call to your local Ford dealership should clear everything right up if you are uncertain.
That's because you don't have the factory parts catalog and you can't see the numerous variants that were used...
yes, that is correct. I do not have the factory parts catalog. I did call my local dealership because i was curious. I was mistaken 80-84 were the same. the difference is 85-86 have a 4 pin connector on the sending unit. at least that is what the shop foreman told me. I hope this helps and sorry for the confusion. he did mention there was a 2 out variant as well, but he didn't specifically say which was for what.
Did someone say in 85 they went to the big hole tanks across the board to accommodate the 302 going to fuel injection? If so, you have the small hole tanks and the big hole tanks.
And I also believe someone mentioned some of the 351w trucks used the same fuel system as the 460's with a return line system. So that would explain the dual tube listing and the single tube listing.

So now I'm hoping I bought the right fuel tank with the right size hole. I have nothing to go by. I should have taken more pics during disassembly.
I went through all of this with my mechanical fuel pump, 351W truck. Got mine from LMC, one was bad (it was EVERYWHERE) They sent out another one for free. This one works better. LMC was the only place I could get one for an 85-86 with no return line and the old style two pin electrical connector.

Sounds like the one I need. Did it come with the lock ring and o ring?
