Ok so this is a problem many of us are going to be having trying to find these tires ive done some research and its been difficult to find them. Ive heard about the military tire option and i like it my problem is still finding them so can you guys post the sites to find these things if ya know of them? It would be a huge help for all of us i believe
cheapest option, due to the weight, is to see if you can find some locally on craigslist, seems like I see them all the time on there. There are 2 different tread paterns, one looks like a weak bfg mud terrain and is bias ply, the other are the radials that have the checks back and forth.
also if you have a military base nearby, check the auctions sites, you could try bidding on them directly, but they list stuff in really weird lots. Like you'll big on a lot of "tires" and get have airplane tires and half truck tires... and from what I've seen the lots tend to be giant. I think one of the lots I saw was 30 pallets of tires.
yeah you can get the bfg all terrains anywhere bfg tires are sold. The firestones are nice highway tires, one of the few decent street treads you can still get on 16.5's, but only come in 29 and 30" sizes, which is pretty small for anything other than a stock 2wd.
The retreads are ok, just depends on what you want them for. My friend's gas service company runs those on all their trucks because they do a lot of climbing right of ways and stuff, but he said they go through a set every 5,000-10,000 miles. Plus they can come on old carcasses, my brother got a set with some old michelin carcasses and the tread was good but the sidewall started to dry rot after a year. I think they are best for commercial applications where you go through a lot of tires and the cheaper cost makes it worth it, but for a truck like I use mine, where it will have the same tires on it for 10 years, I don't think I'd want em.
I broke down and got some 16" wheels this year. Lots of choices: used OE, used aftermarket, reman and new aftermarket. There is a huge population of 16's on the road and tire prices are competitive. 17's are and option also but tires seem more costly.
