Ok as the days went on it was starting slower and slower. Took it to get checked at AutoZone and not only did the alt. fail the bench test they say that the part number on it wasn't for my truck. I got a new duralast gold and installed it and it fails the voltage regulator part. Is it common for it to fail that? They say that it should be working. Should I just keep swapping until it passes that part? I had to get jumped off an hour after I swapped them. I went back and uncooked the ground on one had had them test both batteries and they passed. They say they are 750 cca. After I hooked up the ground it started like it had new batteries. I cleaned the terminals and seams to be ok but only one start since. I have a 7.3l. Is the cca for the batteries right and should the voltage regulators pass? I'm not new to driving diesels just working on them.
AutoZone "Duralast" products don't! I have more than one friend who've worked at AutoZone and they tell me the quality is all over the map depending on the part. If you do a search across the FTE forum you'll find a myriad of threads discussing parts quality from AutoZone and the other chain parts houses.
Duralast "Gold" seems to be the line from AutoZone that has the least frequent problems.
Pulled the starter and all the bolts on the starter were about to come out. The only bolts that were tight were the ones that the last installer tightened when he put it in. Taking it and the alt back in. I know it is hit or miss with AutoZone but with my past with them I only had one other thing that didn't work.
Sounds like you need to go threw all the main electrical connections. All battery connections, all battery cable connections (+and-), clean, dielectric grease, and make sure all grounds are on clean metal.
Well the source of the problem was the starter. When I replaced the one the previous owner got from O'Reilly's all the power came back. Luckily for me gave O'Reilly's their name and they replaced it under warranty.
