Back in June I had some issues with my 2006 Ford F250 Diesel starting. Took the truck to a shop and had batteries load tested. Both are a year old and checked out. Checked alternator and found it had a bad diode so I replaced it. Great for a few weeks and then started having issues again. If I start the truck and drive 5+ miles it charges the system fine so the next time I jump in I have no issues. If I start up first thing in the morning and just pull it out of the garage or take a quick 1 mile or less trip, when I go to start again it struggles like I can tell the voltage is low. Have had the batteries and alternator checked 3 times now as I thought maybe the alternator I got was bad. If I put a meter on the truck while running the alternator does charge both batteries almost instantaneously but there is something dropping the voltage on the initial startup. I had a similar issue with my boat starter so I am leaning towards this but don't want to drop money if I don't have to. The truck has just under 100,000 miles on it and I purchased used at 40K so I am assuming this is the initial starter.
Anyone have any other suggestions or similar issues. I run around to a lot of sites thru out the day and I am tired of worrying if it will start and charging my jump box every couple of days so I have it ready.
Does it start up quickly? Have you ran a load test of the batteries? Have you done a charging output test or done an amp draw test. If those check out within spec pull the starter and do a bench test. If those are all fine then its beyond my abilities as i only know basic electrical
The batteries have been load tested and output testing has been done and checks out OK. I am fairly mechanically and electrically inclined but do you know what I need to do for a bench test of the starter. I really have not even looked where the starter is located.
The starter is on the right side bolted up to the bell housing. i've only done bench testing with a growler and since i doubt you have one just pull it and take it to a parts store. They have the equipment and its free. You didn't say if you had done an amp draw test.
