I have a 78 CCSB 4x4 that I recently bought. It has a 460 that was swapped in over time. Motor ran fine but carb was garbage. I swapped in a Truck avenger 670 and it flooded out the motor and locked it. After that its been nothing but issues. I know this comes with the territory it aint a brand new truck and all. I bought this truck because I love the body style and the 4 door suits the family well and since it being a old truck I really dont give a damn about scratches etc. Previous owner said the motor was rebuilt .030 over small cam and "worked D0VE C heads."
So far I have installed:
Electric fuel pump
fuel regulator
avenger 670 rebuilt it again just cause (after recent research I kick myself in the ***)
1" phenolic carb spacer
later style DS2 distributor
Wires
plugs twice
Previous owner(s) installed
motor rebuilt .030
small cam
edelbrock manifold
MSD 6AL
I think when I first installed the carb and when it hyd locked it screwed up the rings or something. Motor runs only with throttle applied. After about a minute or so it starts to smoke. Motor also misses. Im afraid it might have damaged rings or maybe the con rod bent a little im not completely sure. I have not done a compression check as motivation is extremly low right now. Now the smoke I believe is from the unburnt fuel from whatever dead cyls going into the exhaust sys.
This is kinda frustrating for me. im thinking about rebuilding that motor
again.
This post is kinda half vent half asking for advice. Crappy thing is I have to go to a school for about a month or so in a week so I hate having a broke truck hanging around the drive.
It's highly unlikely your issues are a result of hydro-locking, itself a result of flooding out the carburetor. Hydro-locking is a pretty big deal that takes some work to make happen and does some serious damage.
Smoke after warm: what color? I assume blue?
Missing: is this there all the time, or does it depend on RPM, throttle position, temperature, etc?
When you say it doesn't tick when you give it throttle, are we to assume it ticks at other times?
You mentioned you have not done any form of compression check; without wet and dry checks you're not going to know much about your rings. Also not totally sure what you're asking from us if you're admitting that you have no motivation to fix anything.
Motivation and weather came in so I took shelter for a bit tomorrow compression checks. 15 years in the AF on the flight line and knowing two people who got struck by lightning made me come in.
It misses all the time. The old distributor had a lot of play in it and pretty nasty corrosion so I replaced it as with cap and rotor and plugs. I was thinking that the ignition system suffered from it. So yes there is a noticable difference on how the eng runs but it still misses. At the same time I decided to drain the fuel maybe there was some crap in it water etc.
Maybe it is the carb after reading the reviews it seems like that model is junk. people are just modifying carbs instead.
Tomorrow I will reinstall the stock 4bb to see what happens and do a compression check.
Just my freakin luck! I think lighting struck my house no internet and 2 out of 3 cable boxes fried also no internet and bedroom tv dont work. My life blows right now. Oh well gonna pick up another carb tomorrow.
Me too, I was thinking about getting one but not the one for trucks, 'Summit' advertises the truck version as using more fuel than the others. But I don't know , i have just been getting all of the information i can before buying it.
Google it. I would post a link but im typing through my phone. Complaints from excessive metal flashing to hesitation issues & flooding. Lightning screwed my house up the other night. As far as stuck float i had that issue before. i rebuilt it with a holley kit. Maybe there is garbage in the needles this timeis whatever but just pretty upset the coin invested in this carb and it is acting weird still.
My truck had a bad issue with it flooding due to a stuck float - I solved the problem by putting a filter in the fuel line! Hopefully yours already has one
I don't have any experience with Holley Carbs - but the fact that swapping back to the stock carb fixed it sends up a big red flag. I would take it apart (again) and see what's going on. Make sure you put it back together by the book, and test to make sure that the floats both actuate smoothly.
Take a deep breath and go for a walk, then start rebuilding that Holley. They are good carbs, but sensative to dirt and float level adjustments. Other than that, they are pretty much bulletproof. Mine has been on my truck for over 20 years with no issues. Just make sure you have good filtration and that everything is clean and that the floats move freely.
Set the idle bleed screws correctly, adjust the floats correctly, the accel pump shot correctly and you should be good to go for a long time.
I totally hear you with the frustrations all building up, but the carbs are pretty easy if you just take your time. Use the rebuild session as Zen time with your truck, .
