Ive got a 96' 150 5.0.. As of now I have the stock exhaust except I i cut off the muffler and gutted the big cat them brought it out in front of the rear tire.. If I straight piped it with no cats or mufflers just from the headers back what will I gain or lose other than the fact it will be loud as ****
Since your truck is a 96, it will be OBDII and have an O2 sensor after the small cat. I'd just leave it be unless you want a CEL. It wouldn't be noticeably louder anyway.
Well Im not to worried about a CEL but I've heard some straight piped and there loud but I shouldn't expect any gains or loss in HP or gas mileage should I?
Expect to buy a new Cat when it comes down to inspection time. Other then that, "yes you will gain some throttle response."
You will also heat your truck up faster and it will be harder for it to cool off do to lack of heat dissipation with out having a muffler.
IF you run open headers you have a chance of crystallizing the o-rings on the valves do to too much heat and to quick of cooling off.
Save your money and do it the right way. I use to run the same setup you want on my 1992 F150 and it would overheat w/ under-drive pulleys. With cat / muffler it does not and it's street legal.
I decided to do this set up: from the exhaust manifold y to the small cat then to
The big cat which is gutted then y out to duals coming out at 45* after the rear tires... Noticeably louder then just the single out the passenger side I had before, and still legal and passable
