If it has overdrive, it will be a AOD. If it just has 3 speeds, probably a c6(c6 will be a "K" in the door jamb sticker).

Automatic OverDrive. Set up for gas mileage, not towing/hauling. The lock-up torque converter and .67:1 overdrive really help the MPG, but.....

The AOD can be used for heavy truck work, just do like the Owner's Manual says and keep it out of OD when doing that.

It can be used for towing, and even heavy towing - assuming a decent axle ratio and proper technique. The axle ratio makes a big difference, and many of the 392/AOD combos had cruising gears and not towing gears. So, that needs to be checked if the OP is going to tow.

Having said, Ford didn't put the AOD behind any of the other V8's for a reason.

Right. And, this is when we get into primary vs occasional usage scenarios, and percentages of each.

If you have to replace the tranny then you have a choice of the AOD or C6. The AOD is the better for economy and the C6 is better for towing. As Chris says, you have to figure out the primary vs secondary use.
