Replaced the VSS and the truck still seems to shift hard and the overdrive light started blinking after about 5 minutes of driving. DO i need to clear the codes off the PCM? or is it another problem?
You don't need to clear the codes, you need to read the codes. What codes are setting now? Changing a speed sensor because of a speed sensor code doesn't always fix the problem. Often the problem is in the wiring to the sensor, not a bad sensor.
Did you clear the codes from the first time you read them?
I did clear the codes and still getting the same codes. I am going to check the wiring to the vss tomorrow morning and report back. Do you guys think it might be the Solenoid Pack? If so how can I test the pack?
The only numbers you had posted before were P0712 and P0720. How was I to know that there are other codes that you're hiding from us?
Check the resistance across each solenoid. I don't have the values, but I think they were around 3-4 ohms. More likely than a bad solenoid is a wiring issue between the PCM and the solenoid.
I am having the same issue with my 2001 F350. It use to only occur occasionally, and I do not remember it having the hard shift, but now the light comes on almost every time I drive along with the hard shift from 1-2 and 2-3. I have not had a chance to check it out due to my current work schedule. Looking forward to seeing what you find out the issue is, I hope to check mine out after August 12th. I will keep y'all posted.
I have had transmission wiring problems twice on these trucks. Both times it was right where the wiring goes from the frame to the crossmember on it way to the trans. Right in the middle of the bend. Also the plug that connects to the solenoid pack on my current truck was in bad shape, but still made a good connection.
Also check all the grounds. Just last week I saw dirty battery terminals throw a code for the OSS.
I had this happen to me when I first bought my truck almost 6 years ago. I replaced the VSS on the rear diff and it's been fine since then.
A few weeks ago I took her through an automated car wash that did the undercarriage and wheels. About 1 mile down the road, the transmission starting hunting for OD. 1, 2, and 3 were fine. She still does it, but only when she gets wet. I drove her 26 miles to work and no problems, but no rain either. In the afternoon, it rained, and after a few minutes on the highway, she started jumping in and out of OD again. 1, 2, and 3 still seem to be fine.
I don't have AE and haven't had a CEL in years. Will Autozone be able to get a decent scan to give me codes, or do I really need to find someone with AE?
I plan to get up under her this weekend and check for chafed wires and check my electrical grounds, plus I need to find my Noalox and some big candles.
No, Autozone will not be able to get you all the codes. They might get some, but none that relate to any transmission problem.
The first thing I would check is the connector that attaches to the passenger side of the transmission. If it gets water in it all kinds of things can happen.
I went by Autozone yesterday and they showed no codes.... no surprise there!
Anyone in CO that could read codes for me? I live up in Frederick and if someone could come to me that would be ideal so that I don't do any (more) potential damage to the tranny. Dinner, 12-pack, we'll figure out what is fair.
It's about time I did a fluid change anyway, and since it's been a few years since last time, can someone tell me what is the current "approved" or recommended fluid? Last time I used NAPA brand Valvoline ATF... I think it was Mercon III?
Thanks for the clarification Mark. I wasn't sure what "flavor" of fluid it was since it has been a few years. Any recommendation on the brand to get? I know the NAPA brand was actually made by Valvoline. If that is still the case, that's great, I'll hit the NAPA by my house.
Since Autozone didn't find any codes, they didn't run through the process of clearing them.
UPDATE: I got underneath the truck and couldn't find the connector on the passenger side of the transmission. Anyone have a picture or even a diagram of this connection?
Well i didn't want to be one of those guys who never says what was wrong with their trucks after they fixed them. I had the transmission rebuilt and the mechanics found a broken sprag. Now its no longer throwing the shift code errors.
