im trying to better understand the workings of my truck,1994 f-250 460.i believe that it is a speed density system meaning an unsophisticated injection system? what type of ecm is used?if i wanted to do some upgrades for a torque increase could it be reprogrammed? thanks
Speed-density is not necessarily unsophisticated. It just means the computer makes some assumptions based on measured engine volumetric-efficiency and manifold vacuum.
You can make mild changes. You would want to use a cam that does not have a lot of overlap. To get the most out of it, you would have to find a shop capable of tuning the computer for you.
If you had Mass-Air, it would be more forgiving towards modifications.
You may get more help in the 87-96 F-Series forum, than in here though. It's far more active then this small subsection.
What, and more importantly, why are you trying to understand whats going on under the hood?
There is nothing wrong with SD, as long as you know its limits. For the vast majority of people, stock speed density is more then capable of dealing with power increasing mods.
There are to many things going on to be able to give you a quick run down.
