I know this seems to be an endless debate over the efi's in the 90's. I have picked up a 96 460 efi with the speed density efi system on the engine. It will be installed in my 59 F250. I know the engine only puts out apx 250 HP,and I want the HP to be 450 avg. I also have learned that the SD system is designed for the HP it makes from the factory. I Imagine Ford has an RV type cam that can be put in. I dont think that is going to get me where i want. Can the SD system / EEC IV be re tuned with a larger cam without killing the vaccum that the SD cam needs to function? Or do I have to go MAF? Trying to stay on a budget, but what would be the best apporach? I do have all the goodies needed to run the EFI(computer, harness, etc.)
The speed density system is a little tricky, as you stated. I am pretty sure that it can be chipped to attain what you want, but the SD will always be a limiting factor. I would think putting a 5.0 computer on it would be the best way to go. I would call Steve @ Powertrain Dynamics in Huntington Beach, Ca. He is one of the best EEC-IV tunes around, IMHO. He is a one man shop, so leave a message, and he will call you back (usually the next morning).
Ok guys,I think I am convinced that the SD would hinder my plans. I do want the benifits of FI,so I will start with contacting powertrain dynamics and go from there. Thanks for the support !!
Sam, good point. I just haven't looked into what another set of heads would cost. I am going to completely tear down the engine to refresh it, original (65,000 miles) so maybe I should keep this in mind. Does anybody else have any ideas on what heads to look for if I go carb? Or are the c9ve's the way to go? Will have to change pistons because of the low compression they make or will the combustion chamber size adjust it?
