hello I have a 6 volt system ,and I had the generator rebuilt ,is there a way that I can tell if it is charging ,the gauge shows that it isnt ,is there another way while it is on the truck??,thanks guys!!
1. Measure voltage across the battery while the truck is not running. Should be a bit over six volts.
2. Start truck and bring to high idle. Voltage should show an increase to around seven volts if generator and regulator are working.
raytrach I have a 8 volt battery in my truck, it would be different at the battery wouldnt it??
Unless the regulator has been adjusted I seriously doubt if the generator is going to do a reliable job of charging the battery. Any way, if it is working you'll see higher voltage with the engine running.
Alternate way to determine if the generator is charging is to bring the truck to high idle and pull a battery cable. If the engine continues to run, generator is charging. If it continues to run, don't leave it run long, it is hard on points, they'll be short lived.
