Got home from work this morning and noticed when I pulled in the drive and opened the door a ticking noise coming from under truck. Finally had time this evening to crawl under truck and investigate noise. It's coming from the front of the transmission where it bolts up to engine. It's a pretty much steady tick and goes away for a few seconds here and there. when you increase RPM's it's still there and I think goes away at higher RPM's, it doesn't get louder as you increase RPM's just stays the same level. Any ideas? Anyone else heard this? Will get it to shop Monday hopefully and get this checked out and NoX sensor changed out too.
Recent oil change?
Fresh oil will cause the engine to tick until there is about 1000 miles on the oil.
Ford said this is normal.
I imagine the older engines had this too but we hear this because the 6.7L is quiet.
The other tick is an active regen but you hear that mid cab.
A regen tick only lasts in about 7 ticks every 30 seconds or so though.
Obviously you could have a different issue but these are the two I hear and what I explained is normal.
Mine doesn't tick right away.
It takes a few hundred miles on the oil.
About 1000 or so later, it eventually goes away.
I notice it most when driving along a fence row with windows down.
You know that is odd. I'm very finicky and neither of my 6.7s ticked after oil change.
Maybe some dealers put in different weight oil in them. Causing it. Usually a fresh oil change makes a engine quite and happy.
Yeah, I can verify that it still ticks with synthetic. I use Mobil 1.
My latest ticking experience (other than my left eye and right foot ) was today. I had my oil changed (@ 22,700 miles) Friday, and have gone about 500 miles since.

Kind of like a collapsed lifter in the old days, but lower in the motor, not up by the valve cover. Mine's there at idle to about 1000 rpm, really noticeable but apparently harmless.
Thanks T for the response.
I have been trying to get an answer to that for some time. Have only done one change (synthetic) and did not experience it. What makes it tick (sans oil change)?
I don't know what mechanical piece causes it.
I tried to record it once but my camera picks up the fan noise over the tick.
One of those higher noises the human ear does a better job at picking up.
