Hello everyone, and thank you in advance for your assistance. I own many fords and have been on this site many times, but this is my first post.
I have a 1999 Lincoln Navigator with a blown engine (broken piston rod). I have access to a 2001 Expedition. I would like to know If i could interchange the expo engine into the navigator. Or if i could swap bodies. I mean putting the navigator body onto the expedition chasis/frame. I have both complete vehicles, but I want the navigator to be the one that works in the end. I also dont mind getting rid of the air-ride suspension on the rear of the Navi.
Any info on swaping the bodies would be great. exe If all the electrical components match up, or what i would have to swap to make the other engine work. thank you again.
If they are both 5.4 SOHC engines I believe an engine swap would be the easiest way to go. If the Nav is a DOHC you could swap the SOHC in but you would have to use the matching exhaust.
If the Navigator engine looks just like the engine in the Expedition they are most likely the same and you can verify the engine plant they were made in by checking the engine code in the VIN. That would be the 8th digit in the Vin. If they look the same but have a different digit in the VIN you will need to use the entire engine and accessories in your swap inclding the flywheel/flexplate and torque converter.
the difference between the two engines is the placement of plugs. it is SOHC if the plugs are into the side of the head and DOHC if the plugs are in the middle of the valve cover like a hemi. you will also need the matching engine wiring harness and PCM as the DOHC and SOHC have different strategies of which I learned from my posts recently.
I have seen some '99 Navigators with the SOHC or 16 valve engine and some with the DOHC 32 valve engine so there must have been a running change in the '99 models.
