Yes, it IS an aftermaket tank. My '73 had two, one on each side. I took them off because I didn't like the mounting location, outside of the frame rails.
I removed my dealer installed aftermarket side tank... it rusted out faster than the OE tank. Loosing the valve and extra flex lines was a plus also. After pulling the side tank I could go more than a couple of fillups without replacing the filter.
I later replaced the main tank with a 19... now kinda wish I did a 38. 19 is fine for putting around and there is less gas to go stale but if/when I travel some distance 38 would be a big plus.
I did 19 cause I wanted the polyurethane one, but even for just off roading which is mostly what I use my truck for, the 19 gallon one doesn't last long behind the 460. Plus the 19 gallon one sloshes real bad with less than a quarter tank. I don't think they make a bigger poly one, and I'm really glad I got the poly one, its tough, rust free, etc... but the 38 may be the way to go.
I've never seen a saddle tank for these trucks. If its not rusted out you should post it as available because I think there are a few people on here that would be interested in it for their high boys.
Ford never offered saddle tanks for any truck and the factory installed aft axle and mid-ship tanks mount on the inside of the left (drivers) side frame rail.
Aftermarket tanks are usually mounted on the outside of the frame rail, butted up against the quarter panels. The way the factory installed tanks were installed on Chebbie/GMC.
The fuel caps are usually behind aluminum doors that are riveted to the quarter panels (Styleside bedsides).
Ford Dealers would not normally install aftermarket fuel tanks because there was no way to warranty them. If something needed to be replaced, dealers would have to pay for the parts, eat the labor.
There were dozens of aftermarket tanks available, most peeps would take their trucks to one a the suppliers, have the tanks installed.
