I have started work on my beast and went to work on the interior as if I can make it nice and comfy then other issues become more tolerable. I pulled out the gauge panel and the white plastic part that holds all the gauges and lights is completely brittle and crumbles to the touch. Just like sandstone. Pieces were coming off it as I gently tried to pull it out of the dash. I need to replace some of the bulbs, but I am concerned that if I try to work with it, I will end up with dust.
Anybody else had this issue? Do I have to buy a new gauge cluster or if I can dig up another one from another area will it be more robust?
some of the clusters were/are very brittle..depending on which dash you have you can use a later cluster from a van, I have some clusters available in NJ.... if you can't find any local..just need to swap in what you remove...different plug/wire configurations
note...funny ..oldstyle beat me too it...dang slow internet..
Thanks guys. I may need to take you up on your offer LostInFords as most 80's Ford vans are rusted in pieces up here and you never see them in a wrecking yard.
Just let me know how much you need for the cluster and I will do a quick search around for anything local to me.

I pulled out the gauge panel and the white plastic POS composition cluster back that holds all the gauges and lights is completely brittle, will TURN TO DUST before your very eyes!
Anybody else had this issue? Gazillions of people!
In 1981, FoMoCo came out with hard plastic cluster backs for Econolines. These were also the service part replacements for the 1975/80 POS composition cluster backs.
