Ha! I may have a Predator carb in my hands soon. Found one for cheap, at least compared to what they're flogging them for new and/or on eBay. My cousin is bringing it maybe this week, maybe next. It'll be after the new bathroom's done before I can play with it but couldn't pass it up.
I checked out the Predator website and manual, it's an interesting piece of work. They claim it will work from 390 to 930cfm. It's a squarebore, and by squarebore I mean square bore. There are spring-loaded flaps like the secondaries on an Edelbrock or Q-Jet at the top. No chokes, but the air flap springs are bi-metal. It's apparently easy enough to drill and mount a vacuum port if you need one but I run manifold vacuum anyway.
It looks pretty cool. I remember reading about them in some rod mag when I was a pup back in the '80's but have only seen a couple (from a distance) in real life.
They say to expect a decrease in mileage since it's set to run on the rich side and it will idle between 800-1,000 rpm. 800 is okay with the ZF, maybe at 1,000 the lugging rattle will go away. She idles around 600 rpm with an Edelbrock 500 now.
I just got all the parts to rebuild a little 4100 and this wacky new toy has to fall in my lap.
I have david vizards carb& intake book, and on the predator (which is technically a constant velocity like motorcycles) he explains how they simply have a cam that you can swap out for different fuel curves, i guess you can even get blank cams to file yourself. he says the only downside is some difficulties with fuel distribution.
"...david vizards carb& intake book..." Vizard the Wizard...his Volume One and Volume Two are indispensable to the understanding of performance principles.
ok, god help me, i have committed to: duel plane offey, 390 holley 4 bbl vac secondaries, electric choke, chev rockers, rv2 cam, headers, dura spark II, lets see what a 300 can really do!!
sounds like you are on the right track there. That's pretty much my engine except I have a 260H cam, and don't have the intake heat (which I really need). I am running an old Galaxy heated spacer though. also on the Duraspark, I really can't preach enough on using the GM module and EFI coil. That is probably the single best modification I did.
And also the head porting, if you haven't assembled the engine yet, that is a day well spent. I didn't do it on this engine because it was together when I got it but I did it on my 72 and can't say enough good about that.
The choke point for flow in a 240/300 is the head. While add-ons can increase performance a bit, one doesn't get full value for the parts unless the head is ported/polished.
"I really can't preach enough on using the GM module and EFI coil." That's probable the least expensive upgrade there is...JY parts work fine.
I bought two 5/8" A/C elbows from Sachse Rod Shop then just found a local welder who happened to have some scrap 1/4" aluminum plate and got him to fab a plate. He charged me $25, IIRC.
