I just purchased new rods and clips to get my tailgate working again, but the right side was completely missing the latch assembly. I had a spare one left over from another truck, so I have the latch covered. I noticed the threaded part of the tailgate where the latch on the side attaches is missing all three threaded inserts. It just looks like square holes in the sheet metal.
Can I purchase those threaded inserts anywhere? I know I can come up with something that will work, but I was looking for the correct parts first.
I am away from home at work for another week, so I can not go and look at the tailgate for reference.
Are you sure the nuts aren't a part of the latch itself? I know some other parts our trucks have the square nuts as part of part itself and then you bolt into those and it pulls the square shape on the part into the hole to secure them.
My tailgate was beat up around the mounts on one side and missing some of the square nuts also. I straightened, welded it up as needed and welded in some standard nuts. Works fine. I didn't/don't know where to find the special nuts. From memory they sort of clip in so its a pretty specific design.
I am talking about the latch on the side of the tailgate, not the handle itself. I know for sure it's not part of the latch. I had the latch off of one of my other trucks while replacing the rods and clips, but did not notice anything special about the threaded parts (because I wasn't looking). They might be just a square nut with a flange to where the square part pulls through the hole. Once I get home, I'll take a look and snap a pic or two.
EDIT* If someone has one they could take the latch off the side and snap a pic, that would be awesome.
I ended up just using some threaded inserts. Both my 74 and my 76 had the same problem. Most of the factory compression fit square nuts were missing. Got everything set up with the new threaded inserts and both tailgates work as they should now.
