Making my first hotshot run since I replaced the right head on my '06 F-350 a few weeks ago. Should be a piece of cake run. 10K load to Arkansas and back empty. Nice little 700 mile round trip.
Looking forward to seeing how she runs without a cracked head.
Well made it to Conway, Arkansas and back. The truck ran great, or so I thought. When I opened the hood at a fuel stop the degas bottle had puked about a half gallon of coolant. Fortunately I planned ahead and had 2 gallons of gold coolant in my toolbox. It also puked out another 1/2 gallon on the return trip.
Now I need to figure out what is causing the problem. I think I know the answer, bad left head gasket. So far I have replaced the oil cooler and the right head since I bought the truck in April. By process of elimination, it has to be the left bank, right?
The question I have for you is why didn't just go ahead and replace BOTH heads and been done with it? I can understand the cost factor, but how does it make you feel having to go back in again?
Actually, I did it on my mechanic's advice. He's a Ford Tech and said 90% of the cracked heads he had seen on a 6.0 were on the right bank and sure enough, that head was cracked when he pulled it.
I was getting fuel in the degas before. Now there's no fuel in the bottle, but it's still puking.
So does that mean only 1 head is ARP Studded as well???
No. The truck already had studs on both heads and an EGR delete when I bought it. But you want to talk about snakebit...
The oil cooler popped on the drive home from the car lot. Of course I bought it "as is". Replaced the oil cooler and degas bottle.
Took a trip to Louisiana and it puked coolant. Found fuel in the degas and, on my mechanic's recommendation, replaced the right head and a new degas bottle because the other brand new one was contaminated. Those are $100 a piece, BTW...
That brings us to this trip. Still puking from the degas, but at least there's no fuel this time. I'd hate to break down the maintenance cost per mile so far. Other than that, I love the truck!
Edit: Forgot to mention I added a coolant filter. Maybe that's why I'm not seeing diesel in the degas this time?
I need to crawl under and see if it's plugged in for myself. I'm relying on what my Ford tech told me because to be honest, this engine is completely Greek to me. I'm a shade tree mechanic at best.
It has an EGR delete and a "chip" to keep it from throwing a code. I can't tell you what brand of EGR delete it is or what program is on the chip. All that work was done before I bought the truck and there were no service records or Carfax service records. I found out it already had ARP studs when I replaced the head and was going to upgrade after reading on this board and my tech told me it already had them. Nothing showed up on a service report when I ran it thru the dealer after the oil cooler blew, but that just means they didn't take it to Ford for repairs.
I'm ashamed to say I bought the truck on looks, but it really had the most performance I've ever seen from a diesel and it was a good price. It was hard to say no but I didn't research the 6.0 before I bought it. My last Powerstroke experience was with the old late 80's 7.3 and that thing was a workhorse.
I do have a Scangauge II that I also bought on this boards advice. The fan is cycling at 209*. The highest ECT I saw was 228*, EOT 235*, TFT 185*. That was hauling a 10K load on a 25ft GN trailer at 75mph. I did have to "stomp on it" a couple times in traffic and I'm sure that's when it puked.
