Had a long conversation with my mechanic yesterday. He's hoping it's something simple like a bad degas cap. I'm less optomistic. We installed a pressure gauge so I can watch what's going on with the puking. He told me 16psi is the popoff. If it spikes and bleeds off then it's probably a head gasket.
I drove it a few miles empty to warm up then stomped on it a few times. The pressure went up, but never over 16lbs. I need to get a load on it and see what happens. It's going back in the shop to solve this next week as soon as he gets caught up and we narrow down the issue. I'm hoping to get a run or two to Houston so I can watch it under a load.
He's also trying to talk me into buying my own tuner and putting my own tune on the truck or go back to a stock tune instead of what it has now. At least that way I'd know what it is doing. It was already tuned when I bought it and I have no idea what it is set up for. All I do know is it's a high performance tune because the truck is putting out way more torque than it normally would. My SLK won't spin the tires as easily as this F350 will.
I would flash the truck to stock since you have no idea what is in it, then find a tow tune that adds just a few ponies but changes the trans shifting. High performance and towing does not mix and does not mix well when you have no idea on earth what is in the truck.
It took long enough, but I should get my truck back tomorrow. The left gasket was leaking in 2 places. They were OEM gaskets. When putting everything back together Saturday night, my mechanic found a cracked rocker arm. So that set him back a day waiting on parts. He's getting the part at work today and (if the good Lord's willing and the creek don't rise) will have it together tonight.
He's going to keep it an extra day and drive it to work Tuesday and reflash the computer and make sure there are no leaks, burps, ect. He's as tired of working on the truck as I am paying for it.
Thank goodness he's doing this on the side for me. Not sure I could afford what it would cost if he did it at the dealership.
If you have more than 40hp+ programing and pulling a heavy load that could also be your problem get it back to stock like others have said. Did you get a check engine light at all?
Bismic, I have no idea who did the original work. I'll get some pics of the gasket when I pick up the truck tomorrow.
Mich, I just got off the phone with Gearhead and have an SCT in the mail. Going to load Matt's 8K Tow tune. From what I've read it's a reliable tune and now I'll know exactly what's going on under the hood.
Got my truck back tonight and as you can see it was indeed a bad head gasket. UPS delivered my new SCT this afternoon but I won't be able to talk to Matt at Gearheads until tomorrow and get my Tow tune.
OK... last piece of the puzzle. Loaded Matt's 8K Tow tune. Test drove it empty and I can tell the difference in shifts and shift points. Can't wait until I can test it under a load.
