coolant cap leak

I have coolant leaking from my cap, does this always mean a head gasket is leaking? I did change my cap for a STANT brand cap,so i'm hoping the STANT cap will not handle the pressure. My truck doesnt get hot, as it only leaked half litre over 2 month period.

I haul my 1.5 ton boat regular and if i take on a mountain i take it easy on the pedal usualy 2-2.25 rpm sustained and put my heater on hot to help out which i has helped keep other vehicles cooler at times.

I did expect to have problems with my head gaskets some day but not so soon after Oil cooler, stock EGR gasses blockoff done six week ago.

Maybe i should have just done head gaskets and got it out the way. Any ideas guys.

Try changing the cap again . Sounds like your not lousing to much coolant . Oh and running the heater no need to . unless you really have a problem its not helping these trucks have a unreal cooling system .

Do you have your EGR system intact?

How full are you filling the degas bottle (cold)?

You can get some 3/8 rubber hose several hose clamps and a T fitting and a pressure guage ... remove the small line from overflow to radiator and install your T fitting and run the hose into your cab and install a air pressure guage. Take a drive and watch the pressure guage. It should stay around 4-5 psi. If it gets over 15psi before your coolant temps rise above normal and you dont have any white smoke more than likely it's your gaskets.

Check out this link.

That's how I found mine, the parts cost about $20.00 I got all the parts at NAPA.

Did you answer how full are you filling it? There are min / max designations. Where relative to the min line are you filling it?

Powerstroke help on you tube showed changing to a stant cap? so im gonna pick up a new one from ford tomorrow. I have noticed quality diferences in lordco parts to new ford parts,as when i did these works i looked at thermostats and ford was much better so i fitted a ford thermo.

If you are filling it too full, it will puke. The minimum line is the maximum level you should fill it to. In fact, 1/2" below the min line is where you should fill it to.

There is nothing great about the Stant caps. The updated Ford caps are just fine.

Take what you see on PSH.com w/ a grain of salt.

Pressures around 8-10 psig are normal - not just 4-5 psig. Reaching 16 psig is not normal however.

If you have welded only the end of the EGR cooler that connects to the uppipe, then you can still leak coolant into the intake through a failed EGR cooler.

Levels in these trucks differ mine seems to be good at about an inch below the min mark which lower than most but that is where she is happy .

Jez your coolant level may not raise with HG issues. It's the pressure that it creates that makes the coolant puke. I agree with Bismic that the Stant caps are nothing great but I have had two bad Ford stock caps on my 6.0's.PSH website is trying to get your money so take their info with a grain of salt. However that is how I found out my HG's were bad. Several trips to the dealership while under warranty and they could not duplicate the puking. Keep in mind my truck would only puke when towing or when climbing inclines and boosting 25+ for long enough to build pressure over 15psi in the overflow bottle. BPH and BPD are good websites with information on these trucks but nothing is better than this site and the techs that post here.

Hi bismic
I just filled to min line this weekend, and fitted a new ford motorcraft cap before doing 200 klms. It did puke coolant again maybe a litre.
It seems to do i when im heavier on the pedal 120k and hauling the boat, but i doesnt realy do it when taking it easy.

Oh and my mistake both ports on the cooler were welded shut by good pro welder.
I guess i will have to make up a some tubes n fittings to my pressure tester, and get some pressure readings. Thanks for your knowledge
