Backup Camera Wiring

I give up. If any of y’all would care to take a run at this, I’d appreciate it.

So I run across this guy who has a 2011 F-250 tailgate he wants to get rid of. The genius in me says “ Hey I can get a new hinge for that tailgate and it looks like it would fit perfect. I’ll get a backup camera which will plug into the Pioneer radio I’m already putting in, a step and SuperDuty logo to boot. What’s not to like?”

Well I thought I’d be the only one on the block to have something like this but after getting home and doing just a quick search, I can see I am a day late and a dollar short once again. This is old news to you guys which I hope happens to be lucky for me.

In my wiring search I have found several configurations. I appears the F-150s are different than the SDs and ’08 is different than ’11, amongst the differences. On top of that, my configuration doesn’t match any that I have found. The camera has a 29 Oct 10 manufacture [in Mexico] date. It has 6 wires that go to the 1st connection off the camera [I believe C4397]:

Pin 1 BK
Pin 2 BK
Pin 3 BK
Pin 4 WH-BL
Pin 5 WH-GY
Pin 6 BK

The male connector on the camera end of the tailgate harness [again C4397 I believe]:
Pin 1 VT-GY
Pin 2 BK
Pin 3 blank
Pin 4 WH-GN
Pin 5 BN-BK
Pin 6 BK-WH

The female connector of the tailgate harness which connects to the body harness [C4000 I believe]:
Pin 1 VT-GY
Pin 2 WH-GN
Pin 3 BN-BK
Pin 4 BK
Pin 5 BK-WH
Pin 6 blank

Here is what I think I know. There were only two consistent items through all the wiring diagrams I’ve come across for the camera. Pin 1 has been the power and Pin 4 has been Video +. If this is indeed true, I should be ok. I can just mix and match the rest til I find a working combination. Its just that power = pin 1 issue that has me worried. I’d hate to fry the camera.

Working on this, I have come to the conclusion that I am just another old fart with apparently more money than brains for tackling this but not enough money that I just by a new SD and be done with it.

Let me get this right, you are going from a factory Super Duty camera to an aftermarket radio right?? If so, I have done this 3 times and it has worked like a charm. This is what I have for the Tech info:

Ok for the tech data. The camera connector beneath the tail gate is C497 and is a 6 conductor cable.
Pin 1 is Violet with Gray strip and is +12 volts
Pin 2 is White with Green strip and is Video +
Pin 3 is Brown with Violet strip and is Video -
Pin 4 is Black and is a ground shield for Video. This is Not power ground and should not be used for Power Ground.
Pin 5 is Black on Male connector and Black with White stripe on Female connector and is Power Ground.
Pin 6 is not used.

That is perfect and fast too!

Three times? I owned my last truck for 23 years. Hopefully this will get me through till they won't let me drive anymore!

I've put two aftermarket Camera's on my F250, fairly cheap ones from China, but they work excellent for me. rear view camera (backup & trailer hitch view) wired the camera into the reverse light harness on the drivers side so the camera powers on when i go into reverse, & a second camera I wired into a key on accessory slot on the fuse block for front facing camera & monitor. inexpensive & easy way to improve your view of the little hard to see toy cars so many people drive today.

I need to add a backup cam to my F-350. But I want to mount it on the tool box so I can see my GN hitch. My aftermarket radio has inputs for 2 cams.

Yep, did it on mine once and then installed them on 2 different trucks for friends. I have a cousin looking for one as well, then I will install it on his. IMO, the factory camera costs too much vs going aftermarket.

Can you tell me what after market cameras you used and where you got them?

I have an Edge Evo CTS Tuner which has a single video input. I'm thinking of installing (2) cameras , one at the license plate ( regular backing up etc) and the second at cab light ( for lining up my 5ver hitch) feeding these into a simple A/B video switch and running a line to the input on the Edge from the switch.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Honestly, just get something that's waterproof and decent quality, maybe even some type of warranty. I got all mine from eBay. Lets face it, everything is made in China now so it's tough to really pinpoint one I'd recommend to anybody. I will tell you this, the license plate camera seems to get beat up the most. Especially for me, since I tow a lot in the winter and everything seems to spray up in that area. That's where the camera in the tail gate is better for back there. IMO, I'd still rather have it in the license plate because it give you a wider/better view of things.

Old post, but i currently have a Factory backup camera connected to my rearview mirror. Its new to me, so i'm trying to figure out how to add an aftermarket head unit and use the same camera feed.

Is there somewhere in the dash I can tap into the video feed? Also what is Video + and Video -?


Or is there a write up or info on how to do it? I prefer not to run lines to the camera if i can avoid it.

I'm quite pleased with the quality for the price compared to my wife's factory Town & Country one. I mounted it near the license plate, aimed at my trailer hitch and connected to an upfitter switch along with auxiliary lights to aid in night time trailer hook-ups (that sounds bad if you read it wrong, lol).

Camera only, I may get a second one for general use connected to back-up lights (the monitor takes 2 inputs):

On the 2011 I traded I was able to tap into the video in the passenger side kick panel area. This allowed video to be shown in the mirror and the Ford Nav radio.

these are the instructions i received for the pins....

A white wire with a green stripe, a black wire and a tan wire with a violet stripe. These are the video wires coming from the camera. Now, if you look at the top half of the plug, you will notice that there is nothing in the positions that line up with these wires...there may be one in the position of the tan with violet strip wire...if so you can simply remove that wire from the top half of the plug. The video (+) should line up with the white with green stripe wire. The video (-) should line up with the tan with violet stripe wire. If you have a shield on the above two wires, it should line up with the black wire.

as you know, most any electrical circuit requires a return path to complete the circuit. we normally just call this a ground or neutral wire. with video, you video (+) is the video signal and video (-) is the video signal neutral/return/ground. This isolates the video with its own dedicated return path to complete the circuit. This helps prevent interference that distorts the video.

I've personally never done it where I tapped off existing for video feeds, but it looks like strokin has. Nice work rep gun is jammed. I'll get ya next time..

my video + is to white with green stripe wire
my Video - tan with violet stripe wire
Black is to shield. When you say shield, you are referring to the foil on the RCA cable?

i might be color blind....

looking at the pics, the white green and black are the 2 middle ones on the bottom row.

is the tan(brown) violet one the top 2nd from the right or the very left top one?

they are all on the back row of the 3rd pic....white/green on left, black in middle and tan/violet on left....the flash washed out the tan coloring....

they were all on the back row of the connector as shown in the photo.
