Hi
I have a 97 2wd F-Super Duty with an E40D trans. I have had trans overheating problems since I owned the vehicle. The trans will overheat under no load and just around town and mostly highway speeds. The other day it overheated when getting off the highway. Fluid is now coming from the bellhousing at a study rate. The fluid was so hot it was sizzling but the cooling lines leading to the radiator and the auxilary cooler did not feel hot. Just warm. Any chance the cooling system is not recieving enough pressure to cool the fluid? The system was recently flushed so I assume the system is not clogged. Suggestions?
Ok I'll do that. If a blockage was not the issue, what could be responsible for low pressure? I am pulling the trans today due to that blown front seal. Also, a large amount of fluid is able to drain from the front seal. Because of this, the transmission has no function at all. Does this sound normal? I really dont want to replace this trans.
I came up with no codes with an OBD2 scanner. However the "off" light on the column shifter has been blinking. I have never been able to pull a code from that blinking light.
If the light is blinking you have a code.....you need a good scanner to read PSD codes....Like a Snap-on MT 2500 or AE or Autotap Diagnostic like I have......a regular cheapo scanner will not read the codes ....I suggest you find out what the codes are before you remove the tranny......
Im sure it will throw unrelated codes but I just need what is in memory. Had a quick look inside the tranny (only the overdrive clutches) and so far so good. Now im going to seal up the pump and hopefully get her back in tomorrow. Still a question on the no activity thing. The front seal was leaking substantially. I checked the fluid level and topped it off to attempt to move the truck. Still zero activity with it filled. Normal?
This is my pump (apart) from my E40D. That bushing definitely needs to be replaced. That bushing scarred the T.C. Is that ok or what needs to be done? Also, I found metal shards in two of the ports in the pump. The shards are revealed on the zoomed images; outside most port in the pump, bottom and top sides of the images, and the dark circular feature toward the left and right center of the zoomed images. Any knowledge of the shards source?
