8.8" differential...which is which???

I have a 1988 Bronco that came with an H9 3.55 limited slip differential in the rear. The carrier was blown up, so I am replacing it. The carrier in the truck had what looks like a "Trac-lok" system with the S-spring and all the shims/clutches in it. The one I picked up from a salvage guy looks a lot the same, except that I don't see all the shims/clutches or the S-spring in it. It just has side and spider gears, and a shaft. So, I'm wondering if this is in fact a limited slip diff or just an open diff. Or did the ltd. slip carriers change designs some in the later years, since this diff I got is off a slightly newer pickup. Thanks.

Okay, thanks. That confirms my suspicion. At least I got new gears for only $50. Wonder how much a Ltd Slip Diff would be from a yard.

I wouldn't try and get a LS from a junkyard. Usually they start to loose their ability to work properly after time, so baiscally you'd be getting a used weak LS.

A new LS is about $200, and so are some lockers, so you could think about a locker. Not sure what your conditions are for.

My conditions are basically for snow plowing, which I know is a perfect application for a LS diff, but I'll give this $50 fix a try this year. We just moved into the snow belt, and I just got the truck for $500 and will be putting a plow on it in time for winter, so we'll see how it goes. This truck isn't going to see much off road time...that's what my '71 Bronco is for!!

Just to say, if you find a 73-79 1/2 ton 4x4 or 78 79 Bronco, you'd have more luck with finding a limited slip with 3.50 gears.
