I searched and the best I could come up with is the frame VIN is stamped on the top driver's side. Can anyone elaborate? I can't find it on my 1978 F150 4x4. Is it by the front crossmember? Back by the firewall? Thanks.
on the 4wd it SHOULD (but isn't always I guess) be between the front cab/body mount bracket & coil bucket on top of the pass. side frame rail. You might need to wire brush a bit to get to it. And some were stamped pretty light & barely show up.
He's not the only one. I've been called a liar a few times, but my frame isn't stamped either. I had the body completely off the frame and wire wheeled the entire frame and searched with a bright light for 3 days. My frame isn't stamped.

It was right where you said it was, thanks! I looked and looked but couldn't see anything. Then I could make out what appeared to be a J which is part of my cab VIN. So I sprayed some engine degreaser and waited, washed it and more became visible with some rubbing with a rag. Brake cleaner and the rag made the whole thing completely visible, and it's stamped very well.
My driver door came off a '77 so I wanted to make sure the cab VIN matched the frame VIN before I order a Marti report with replacement door tag.
I've tried to look using a mirror but couldn't see anything. I know my cab has been swapped cuz it's titled as a 73 2WD but it's on a 74 4WD frame & drivetrain... it has a Ranger bed based on its emblem holes... pretty much a Frankentruck but I am a happy dentside owner.
Found mine last night on the top of the frame between the radiator support mount and the front cross member on the pass side.
It's a 2wd then - right? 2wd's and 4wds are typically stamped in different places.

Cool deal - glad I could help. They typically take a little investigating & cleanup to find.

With all the dust/dirt that settles on top of the frame since there's room under the cab they take a bit of cleaning to see. Just like the ones up front, so it's no surprise, but I wonder if ones there? Maybe the previous owner ground/sanded the front one off due to the cab swap? California does base VIN of vehicle on the frame VIN - not cab, so if it was a cab swap maybe they wanted to run the cab VIN and made the other disappear.
