I have this truck that I bought new in 1990. For the past few years, when I go out and start it, everything is normal. Then on a random basis you turn the key, and it is exactly like the cluch lock out is not working... (manual trans)
Nothing I can do setting in side will coax it into starting...Had the starter/solinoid replace....went OK for a while, then same symtoms.
However if I crawl under the truck short out the solinoid, starts right up, and the next time I shut it down, and try to start...everything is OK..maybe the next 20 times?? No problem.
But just let me get complacement, and park near a pool of water, or a rainy day, and it goes back to click, click click.
Right now I suspect there may be some corrowion on the solinoid terminal, and might pill the entier starter unit (again)and re-clean all the connections.
it sounds to me like the problem isn't at the starter, but at the wires somewhere before it. you might check out the ignition switch, and look for any damage to the wiring around it.
if it wasn't so ready to respond when you shorted the solenoid, i would think about blaming the starter and/or solenoid, but that isn't your case
