I have a 2004 Ex/4x4/V10 with 141k miles. I bought this just over a year ago and have put about 15k miles on it (no troubles at all). I took it to the local dealer yesterday to have it serviced; oil, coolant & transmission filter/fluid change. It went into gear and shifted OK on the ride home but when I got in it today it won't go into gear. The shifter moves from P to all the gears but the tranny is like its in neutral all the time. The linkage moves the sensor on the side of the tranny and the plug on the sensor is secure. Any suggestions of anything to check before calling the dealer to come tow it to the shop? I have used this dealer for several years and trust them so I don't suspect anything about the service.
The dealer called today and said they can't find anything wrong (codes or visual) so it must be something internal that broke and the transmission needs to be replaced. They quoted $3800 for tranny and R & R. I told them I would come by tomorrow and pay them for their time and have them tow it back to the house. I'll find an independent to do the R&R but I need to find a source for good replacement tranny. Any suggestions for the Atlanta area?

Sorry for the pain. I know that hurts. I would try Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market to see what you can come up with. Keep us posted and let us know what you find.
Maybe just the torque convertor? I had a similar thing happened on a Toyota twice. A rebuilt torque convertor was what it needed. I'd get a second opinion.

Not sure how far this is from you, but he gets nothing but great reviews from anyone who has used him.
I called around this morning to get prices (3 recommended shops) on a rebuild and the price was consistant around $2800. I went to the dealer and discussed their quote and found they were $3000 for the tranny and R&R and $440 for the cooler and labor to change it out. They had rounded up for taxes and shop costs to cover the estimate. I asked them what was the best price for everything and they figured the labor at a lower rate and took a few $ off the tranny price, dropped the tow and diagnostic fees, and settled on $3400 and I get a $175 credit for future services. This Ford rebuilt unit has a 3 year unlimited milage warranty backed by Ford and I figure this is worth a few bucks. Anyway, sometimes things just happen and you gotta suck it up. Thanks for all the replies.
If it were mine I would drop the pan and inspect the work done. Check for clean fluid and make sure the filter is installed right and didn't somehow fall off. Also make sure the fluid is full!
No matter how many times I used a certain shop I would still be very skeptical and check everything out myself.
